Mathews hopes to gain from Mahela’s England knowledge

Mathews hopes to gain from Mahela’s England knowledge

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews hopes to utilise Mahela Jayawardene’s inside knowledge of the England set-up when the two teams meet in a Test series later this month.
Jayawardene, one of Sri Lanka’s greatest batsman but retired from international cricket since last year’s 50-over World Cup, recently acted as a batting consultant to England including at the World Twenty20 in India where his ‘adopted’ team reached the final.
Jayawardene, who is due to have a stint playing for county side Somerset in English domestic cricket’s Twenty20 competition later this season, no longer has any official role with the England set-up ahead of the start of a three-Test series at Headingley on May 19. But according to Mathews, he will be close at hand for advice in his new role as a television commentator. Mathews could also tap into the experience of another Sri Lankan batting star in Kumar Sangakkara, no longer on the international scene but now playing for London-based county side Surrey. “When it comes to international cricket there are no secrets to be honest,” Mathews told reporters at Lord’s, where Sri Lanka were training ahead of this weekend’s tour opener against Essex. “I think we have a lot of video footage, they have video footage of us as well, so there are no real secrets. When you get on the park you know what they are up to and the plan for this, and we get to know it.
“But there might be a couple of tactical ideas that Mahela can predict. “I’m pretty sure that guys like Mahela and Sangakkara will always come and help us.” Earlier this year, Sri Lanka Cricket president Thilanga Sumathipala criticised Jayawardene when he started his second stint with England at the World Twenty20. But Mathews was far more relaxed about his former team-mate working with a rival nation. “There’s no problem with guys like that working with other countries,” said the all-rounder.
“They have the freedom to go anywhere and work and we have the luxury of asking them and inviting them to come and help us out as well. So it doesn’t really matter.”

Singapore fall 17-33 to Sri Lanka in Asia Rugby Div 1 opener

Sri Lanka overcame a disjointed first-half performance to beat Singapore 33-17 in the opening match of the Asia Rugby Championship Division I on Sunday. Ranked 38th in the world and 21 spots higher than their opponents, the Sri Lankans began sluggishly and were put under pressure by the Singaporean forwards. The Republic scored two tries through winger Jay-Hykel Jailani and back Peter McFeeley at the Royal Selangor Stadium in Kuala Lumpur to lead 17-15 at the break. But the South Asian side awoke in the next 40 minutes to score 18 unanswered points to seal the win

Most Ven. Warakagoda Gnanarathana Thera is new Chief Prelate of Asgiri Chapter

The Most Venerable Warakagoda Gnanarathana Thera was unanimously elected as the Mahanayake of the Asgiri Chapter of the Siam Sect on Thursday April 7.
The Most Venerable Thero’s appointment makes him the 22nd Mahanayake of the Asgiri Chapter.
The special Sanga Council meeting to elect the new Mahanayake for the Asgiri Chapter was held at the Asigiri Maha Viharaya on Thursday. The decision to select a Mahanayake Thero is taken with the consent of 19 Theras of the Sangha Council.

Despite the undue pressure exerted by a top official in the Department of Sri Lanka Customs, a group of officers have succeeded in uncovering information regarding a stock of vehicles imported to the country while evading taxes.
The vehicle parts had arrived at the Colombo Harbour inside a 40ft container on the 18th of March, 2016.
Customs officers yesterday (7) opened the container to examine the contents and found a BMW Z3, Mitsubishi Intercooler Pajero, Isuzu Crane Truck, Komatsu Excavator, Morris Mini Minor and a Honda motorcycle.
Most of the vehicles had been divided into parts of two or more before being stored inside the container, with the intention of reassembling them after being cleared by customs.
Customs sources revealed that the contents of the container had been registered as vehicle spare parts with the intention of evading taxes.
A retired Additional Director General of Customs has been identified as one of the suspects behind importing the container while a high-ranking official currently serving in the Department had allegedly aided them, sources said.
A group of customs officers had managed to uncover information regarding the racket after preventing the container from being released by customs and opened it, despite the pressure exerted by the aforementioned official.

ICC World Twenty20 2016 Points Table

ICC World Twenty20 2016 Points Table

Gayle, Afridi lead West Indies, Pakistan wins

Gayle, Afridi lead West Indies, Pakistan wins

Chris Gayle has smashed a century while Shahid Afridi rediscovered his boom with the bat as the veteran destroyers powered the West Indies and Pakistan to victories at the World Twenty20. Gayle struck 11 sixes at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium in a 47-ball century as the West Indies comfortably chased down England’s total of 6 for 182 with 11 balls remaining in their tournament opener. Afridi starred with bat and ball as he skippered Pakistan to a comprehensive 55-run victory against Bangladesh in Kolkata, drawing a line under his team’s troubled build-up. Both men had faced some hostile headlines in recent weeks and they revelled in their triumphs, with Gayle saying he had been on a mission to entertain his team-mate Sulieman Benn. “Before I went out Sulieman said you’re going to ‘entertain me’,” said a beaming Gayle after hitting the third fastest international T20 century and the quickest in a World Twenty20 tournament. “I wanted to entertain my team-mate - he’s my drinking partner as well.” After his blistering 19-ball 49 helped Pakistan post a commanding total of 5 for 201, Afridi took two key wickets in a tidy spell that helped limit Bangladesh to 6 for 146 from its 20 overs. A relieved Afridi, accused in some quarters of being a “traitor” for saying he received more “love” from Indian than Pakistani fans, said he was proud to have led by his example. “It’s a big event and I thought I should take responsibility as the captain,” Afridi said after being named man-of-the-match. While his batting pyrotechnics once earned him the nickname “Boom Boom”, Afridi has endured a torrid time at the crease in the last couple of years and some observers felt his ability to play a match-winning innings had gone for good. But after promoting himself to number four in the order, Afridi smacked four boundaries and four sixes to help Pakistan register their second highest score in T20s. “I was hungry. I was keen to perform well for my country... As senior player, I had to lead by example,” he said

Nobody contributed to UPFA expenses - Susil

Former UPFA General Secretary and Minister Susil Premajayantha says that if they had not contested the 2015 General Election as an alliance under the ‘Betel Leaf’ symbol, it would not have been possible to win 95 seats in the Parliament.  If so Ranil Wickremesinghe would have been able to establish a UNP government alone with a clear majority, he said, addressing media after Minister Mahinda Amaraweera officially assumed duties as the UPFA General Secretary.  The Minister of Science Technology and Research further said that during his tenure as UPFA general secretary nobody contributed to the party’s expenses and that only he and Anura Priyadharshana Yapa know about those expenses.  Premajayantha said that he served as UPFA General Secretary under three leaders and that he never even used a short signature without informing the leaders.  The minister said that as a lawyer he represented the alliance in 173 court cases and that he never charged the party for those services. He also said that he has no need for any positions.  Premajayantha said that while life is not eternal one should be ready to give up posts knowing they would die one day.  UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera, who also addressed the event, said that everyone should unite to work under the alliance in order to form its own government in the future.  He stated that there are no shortcuts to obtain power and that it is no easy task to come into power without doing so.  Amaraweera said that whoever acts without thinking about the alliance coming to power is fulfilling a contract of the UNP - See more at: http://www.adaderana.lk/news/34579/nobody-contributed-to-upfa-expenses-susil#sthash.lXZLmSHz.dpuf

Wikipedia’s new iOS app focuses on discovery, personalization

Wikipedia today launched an upgraded version of its iOS application aimed at helping users better discover content matching their own interests, including both articles and images. In addition, the app has been optimized for Apple’s newer OS and latest iPhones (6s and 6s Plus) with support for 3D Touch and Spotlight Search integrations.
This is the latest in a series of efforts from the organization to make its mobile application something users turn to for more than everyday fact-checking purposes.
In the past, those efforts have included the rollout of more utilitarian features like offline access and mobile editing, as well as an experiment with going social by way of shareable “fact cards,”  which were added last year. (That feature is still supported, but has been made less prominent. You now have to select text to “share a fact.”)
In the latest version, Wikipedia focuses more heavily on finding interesting things to read and personalization. That is, it presents users with a new “Explore” feed that showcases a combination of the top read articles, the featured article and featured picture of the day, random articles, and nearby articles, in addition to those recommended based on how you’ve been using the app previously. These latter suggestions will be related to what you read on the app, the organization says.
In addition, the update includes support for navigating using multi-touch gestures (including swipe, tap and 3D Touch), as well as 3D Touch from the app’s icon on the homescreen. This will let you open search, read a random article, see nearby articles, or continue reading your latest. Another iOS-specific feature, Handoff, is now supported in this release, too.
Finally, a feature that you save articles to read later, which are also available offline, arrived along with improvements to image galleries and tools to more easily share articles via social media or email.
The extent any of these changes – or those in the past – are having on Wikipedia’s traction on iOS is less certain. The app remains top-ranked in the “Reference” category on the App Store, where it’s usually in the top 15 or 20 (Though, lately it dropped a bit to the 30’s.) However, it’s certainly not one of the most popular “Overall” apps on the iPhone, despite its brand-name awareness.
The problem is that many people don’t think of Wikipedia as a place they want to explore, but rather a place to look something up. And the fact that its web content has been surfaced through Apple’s Spotlight Search since iOS 8 likely satisfies most in need of a quick fact check. Wikipedia is still trying to find the sweet spot in terms of making its iOS app something that would be more regularly launched, but it’s not a certainty that simply rolling out a better “explore” feed will do the trick.
That said, the app is well-designed and highly polished, and worth the download for those who would rather learn something in their free time rather than goof off on Snapchat or Vine. The updated Wikipedia app is live now on the iTunes App Store.

Ulysses for iPhone makes me consider writing articles on my phone

I write hundreds of words every day on my phone. At first it was just emails and text messages, but now it's also Slack conversations, notes and countless of messages of various sizes and shapes in all sorts of messaging apps. And yet, there's one thing I've refrained from doing so far — writing TechCrunch posts on my phone. But this is also changing.
Earlier this week, small indie development shop The Soulmen released Ulysses for iPhone. Ulysses is a popular writing app on OS X and iPad. I've played with the app on my Mac in the past. But I couldn't really consider using it seriously because there was one missing element — an iPhone app.
Ulysses is a Markdown text editor for small and big projects. It works quite well for anything between a blog post and a novel. And Ulysses is also the kind of apps we need on iOS. It's an expensive $25 app that provides nearly all the features of its desktop equivalent. In other words, it's a serious app to do serious work with a clear business model. And of course, everything stays in sync between the different versions of the apps.
And this is key to understanding how Ulysses stands out. I can now start a draft on my phone, edit it on my iPad, give it a final look on my Mac and publish it on this website. I've already written a handful of drafts in Simplenote on my iPhone in the past. But this is a much more streamlined process.
Ulysses is a polished iOS app that lets you write, organize and export your writing in different formats. It's a well-designed, versatile app that is worth trying if you write every day. It competes with many other apps, such as Editorial and 1Writer on iOS, and Scrivener on OS X.
I wanted to take Ulysses one step further and make it work seamlessly with our CMS — WordPress. I started with Ulysses for OS X. With a few clicks, I can now run a Ruby script that sends my draft to our backend so that I just have to review it, tweak a few options and publish it.
But what about iOS? You can't do that on iOS right? Feeling inspired by iOS automation wizardFederico Viticci, I tried to recreate my OS X script on iOS. And sure enough, automation appWorkflow lets you do that just fine. I can now post to WordPress from Ulysses and auto-fill the headline, tags and excerpt using this workflowAnother workflow lets me upload images to WordPress from iOS.
I've already written a few posts using this process and it's been even more useful than I expected. I already spend so much time typing on my iPhone that I can type nearly as fast on my iPhone as on my Mac. But in many cases, it's much more convenient to write on my phone. In fact, this post was written on my phone.

Play your Steam first-person shooters in full virtual reality with MyDream Swift

As the launch dates of the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive virtual reality headsets approach, so does the release of a ton of awesome VR gaming content. To gamers with full Steam libraries however, it’s kind of a shame that once they put the headset on, most of their favorite content is no longer available to enjoy.
MyDream Swift is looking to bring old Steam content into the next generation of gaming with its VR conversion software that brings experiences like Battlefield and Borderlands into immersive virtual reality.
You can try any DX9 or DX11 game (i.e. most popular games) with the software, but it’s definitely optimized for first-person shooter-style POV experiences. For the non-FPS titles that feel a bit wonky in VR due to camera perspectives, the app also has a cinema mode that gives you a “near distant” virtual screen setup to view and dive into familiar titles within the VR headset.
The team didn’t set out to build a piece of software like Swift, initially they were just looking to convert their own game MyDream, a creative community game that lets players build their own 3D worlds, into a virtual reality experience.
The Swift UI isn’t all that flashy, but it’s about as simple as it gets. Check a box for “Cinema mode,” select your title and you’re good-to-go. Looking to dive into full VR for a first-person game? Just check “AutoVR” and “first-person camera controls,” launch the game and get to playing.
The team says that games convert with lossless quality and maintain 90hz render times so everything should look smooth, though Swift notably foregoes stereoscopic rendering for the sake of performance. I was given a remote demo of the software, but when it comes to VR you really have to try it in-person to see how experiences stack up. MyDream understands this as well and told me that they’ll be offering demos at VRDC in San Francisco this week to anyone who wants to take the software for a whirl.
MyDream Swift is available for pre-order now for $29.99 and is available for download on March 28. The $30 buy also includes MyDream VR, the company’s latest iteration of its namesake gaming title.

CEB Chairman to resign over blackouts

CEB Chairman to resign over blackouts

Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Anura Wijayapala says he is ashamed of the three island-wide blackouts which occurred during last 6 months and that he takes responsibility for the outages.
The CEB Chairman says that he has decided to resign from his position once power is completely restored.
A sudden island-wide power outage occurred at around 2.30pm today (13) and the CEB is still in the process of restoring electricity to several areas.
This comes just weeks after a similar outage occurred on February 25, prompting the Prime Minister to appoint a five-member committee to investigate the incident.
The CEB had said that a possible lightning strike on a transmission line is believed to have caused the power failure which had also resulted in a breakdown at the coal power plant in Norochcholai.

US Election 2016: Cruz and Rubio attack Trump in debate

Republican presidential hopefuls Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio have unleashed a barrage of attacks on front-runner Donald Trump in the last debate before next week's pivotal primaries.
The senators sought to blunt Mr Trump's momentum after he won three of the first four contests.
Immigration, healthcare and outreach to Latino voters dominated the debate.
But like previous occasions, the debate quickly disintegrated into long periods of shouting and personal insults.

Guantanamo Bay: Obama in bid to close controversial prison

The White House has presented to Congress a plan to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, one of the president's long-standing goals.
It wants to transfer the remaining 91 detainees to their home countries or to US military or civilian prisons.
But Congress is deeply opposed to terror suspects being held on US soil and is expected to block the move.
The prison costs $445m (£316m) to run annually and closing it was a 2009 promise from President Barack Obama.
Human rights campaigners have repeatedly complained about the prison in Cuba, which has held 780 detainees since it opened in 2002.
The president told reporters on Tuesday it undermined national security.
"This is about closing a chapter in our history," said Mr Obama. "It reflects the lessons we've learned since 9/11 - lessons that must guide our nation going forward."
But Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio was scathing in his criticism, saying Guantanamo prisoners do not belong on US soil.
"These are literally enemy combatants," he said, adding he would ship terrorists straight to Guantanamo "to find out what they know".
    Life after Guantanamo prison
    Will Guantanamo prison finally close?
There are four main components in the White House plan:
    • Transfer 35 detainees to foreign countries who have been designated to do so
    • Do periodic reviews of remaining detainees to see if their detention is still necessary
    • Continue to use legal tools to deal with remaining detainees
    • Working with Congress to establish a location in the US to hold detainees who will not go to foreign countries
It estimates the move would save up to $180m (£128m) a year in cost savings.
The president, who will complete his second and final term in January, said it was important not to pass the problem on to his successor.
"Keeping this facility open is contrary to our values. It undermines our standing in the world. It is viewed as a stain on our broader record of upholding the highest standards of rule of law.''

Analysis: Tara McKelvey, BBC White House reporter

President Obama has tried for years to close Guantanamo. He and his deputies say that it hurts the reputation of the US and that militants use "the infamous orange jumpsuit", as one senior administration official described it, as a recruiting tool.
But members of Congress have baulked at Mr Obama's plan to close the prison, saying they believe it should remain open - and they don't want any detainees to be transferred to the US. Representative Mike Pompeo of Kansas, for example, said the prisoners should "stay right where they are".
Lately, though, White House officials said that lawmakers, or at least some of them, seem more receptive to the idea.
A senior administration official told reporters that there's "room for conversation". That's important since Mr Obama has less than a year to close the prison - and for him time is of the essence.

Guantanamo Bay is located on an American naval base in south eastern Cuba. Former US President George W Bush opened it to accommodate foreign terror suspects after the 9/11 attacks on the US.
One of the key complaints from human rights groups is that many detainees have been held there without charge or trial.
The plan does not specify where in the US detainees would go.
But the Pentagon has considered 13 different locations in the US, including seven prisons in Colorado, South Carolina and Kansas, and six other places on military bases.

Sex abuse victims to face Cardinal George Pell in Rome

Catholic Cardinal George Pell will face an audience of child abuse survivors when he testifies to an Australian inquiry from a Rome hotel.
Cardinal Pell was excused from returning to Australia to testify at the royal commission into child sex abuse due to ill health.
Abuse survivors and their supporters have raised enough money to attend Cardinal Pell's testimony in Rome.
A room at the Hotel Quirinale will be the venue for next week's hearing.
The cardinal's testimony begins on Monday morning Australian time and is expected to run for three to four days.
It will be streamed live to the Royal Commission's hearing rooms in Sydney and Ballarat Town Hall, and will also be viewable online.
The group that will comprise Cardinal Pell's audience, which raised more than A$200,000 ($143,000; £100,000) through crowdfunding, is expected to fly to Rome this weekend.
Survivor Andrew Collins told Fairfax on Monday it would be an "arduous journey" to Rome, but said Cardinal Pell "should have to see people and look into their eyes".
The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has focused much of its efforts on widespread child abuse by Catholic church clergy in Australia.
It is currently hearing testimony regarding child abuse that occurred in the city of Ballarat, including by notorious paedophile priest Gerald Ridsdale.
Cardinal Pell was a priest in Ballarat and lived together with Ridsdale in the early 1970s.
He is not facing criminal charges, but detractors say child abuse that happened under his watch has made his Vatican position untenable.
Cardinal Pell has testified at the inquiry twice before in relation to other matters, once in person and once via video link.

Austria-SL benefit from peace dividend -President

President Maitripala Sirisena in a statement to the media during his visit to Austria said Sri Lanka and Austria would work closely to ensure that both countries benefit from the changes taking place in Sri Lanka and from the peace dividend. "Sri Lanka and Austria have enjoyed friendly and cordial diplomatic relations for over six decades and I have just concluded a productive discussion with the Federal President and discussed ways of making our partnerships stronger," the President added.
"Our main focus is to strengthen bilateral trade and bilateral high-level exchange has been put in place, thus helping to expand cooperation in trade and economic relations, culture, education and sports.
Austria has provided a number of scholarships to Sri Lankan students in the hospitality field contributing to the development of Sri Lanka's hospitality sector.
"I am happy that Austrian companies are active in my country, implementing a number of projects. Among others, we discussed matters of mutual interest such as joint investment, ventures and opportunities including, increase market access. We would work closely to ensure that both countries benefit from the changes that are taking place in Sri Lanka and from the peace dividend . Trade and investment between our two countries are also showing a significant and a positive sign," he said.
"We are keen that the momentum in our trade volume turnover will increase in the coming years. Ceylon tea is popular in Austria and I have learnt that Ayurveda has also become a significant attraction for Austrain tourists", he added.

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz announced today at a campaign event in Nevada that he has asked for his Communications Director Rick Tyler's resignation.
Cruz's action comes after Tyler shared on his social media account a subtitled cellphone video that falsely shows Rubio telling a young man that "not many answers" are in the Bible, and after Rubio condemned the move as a "dirty trick."
Tyler deleted the post and then apologized for it.
"I posted in haste. I should not have done it," Tyler said on Fox News this morning. "I've apologized to Marco Rubio. I apologized to the campaign and I posted that on my Facebook and also shared it on Twitter and I'm saying it here. It was a mistake and I would not knowingly post something that I knew to be false but you're right. The judgment about what he said was wrong and so I apologize about that."
But Cruz did not think it was enough. Cruz said that it was a mistake to question anyone's faith and called for Tyler's resignation. It is unclear if Tyler has in fact resigned.
"Rick Tyler's a good man. This was a grave error of judgment," Cruz said this afternoon. "But I'll tell you even if it was true, we are not a campaign that's going to question the faith of another candidate. Even if it were true, our campaign should not have sent it. That's why I've asked for Rick Tyler's resignation because the standards of conduct in this campaign have been made absolutely clear for every member of the campaign."
Cruz then turned back to hitting Rubio: "I understand that Marco's campaign team believes it's politically advantageous to try to distract the topic from his own record. And they have a long record they've earned in South Carolina of engaging in this kind of trickery and impugning whoever their opponent is to distract the attention," Cruz said.
Rubio's communications director, Alex Conant, commented on Cruz's move to get rid of Tyler.
"Rick is a really good spokesman who had the unenviable task of working for a candidate willing to do or say anything to get elected," Conant said in a statement. "There is a culture in the Cruz campaign, from top to bottom, that no lie is too big and no trick too dirty. Rick did the right thing by apologizing to Marco. It's high time for Ted Cruz to do the right thing and stop the lies."
Speaking to reporters in Las Vegas earlier today, a visibly angry Rubio commented on Cruz's latest hit. "I think we are at a point where we start asking about accountability," he said.
"This campaign now has repeatedly done things that they have to apologize for, and no one is ever held accountable. Who's going to be held accountable for making up this video, who is going to be held accountable for lying about Ben Carson? Who was held accountable for the robocalls, and who was held accountable for the commercials on television that they had to pull down?" Rubio went on, referring to several shady tactics the Cruz campaign has been linked to in recent weeks.
Rubio also called the video "incredibly disturbing."
Rubio said he accepted the Cruz campaign's apology, but that this was starting to become a pattern.
"It's every single day something comes out of the Cruz campaign that's deceptive and untrue," he said.
Rubio said the Bible video was "perhaps the most offensive" tactic to date, as it attacked his faith.
"I know exactly what I said to that young man," Rubio said. "I said the answer to every question you'll ever have is in that book."

Dhoni's spasms may shake up India's batting combination - Kohli

In the lead up to the World T20, India's success in the shortest format has been built on the success of their top order. They swept Australia 3-0 with Virat Kohli scoring 199 runs in three matches. He was dismissed only once. Rohit Sharma was not too far behind, making 143 runs at an average of 47.66 and a strike rate of 136.19. Shikhar Dhawan found form against Sri Lanka and even showed signs of an expanded range of shots on the leg side.
It is likely that these three will still be India's top three when they play the World T20, but at the Asia Cup they have a minor problem. MS Dhoni is an uncertain starter for the tournament opener against Bangladesh after an onset of back spasms during training in Fatullah on Monday and this means that the batting combination needs to be relooked. So, Parthiv Patel, who has not played for India since 2012, has been flown in as cover.
Parthiv was part of the senior core that won Gujarat their first-ever domestic one-day trophy last December. He hit his first-ever List A ton to secure the title. He was in fine form in Twenty20s as well, striking four fifties in five matches, including three on the trot. But perhaps the most surprising aspect of his success in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was his strike rate - 162.80 - comfortably the best among the top-five run-getters in the tournament. Parthiv finished with 337 runs in nine matches, but all those runs had come at the top of the order.

Budging Rohit, Dhawan and Kohli off Nos. 1, 2 and 3 does not seem likely. Then there is Suresh Raina, who needs to get used to No. 4 because Dhoni wants to try him at that position in the World T20, and Yuvraj Singh can bat no lower than No. 5. So if Dhoni, who is the regular No. 6 is unable to play, Parthiv might well have to slot into the lower-middle order. None of this is certain because India have not ruled out their captain from playing the match on Wednesday, but if the injury is anywhere near serious and with the World T20 just weeks away, it seems logical that they won't take any risks.
"Obviously, a player having a niggle just before a game and obviously someone like MS who is sort of a pillar for us in the middle order [is a problem]," Kohli said. "[And with] Parthiv coming in, we will obviously have to sit down and see [what happens] if that situation comes in where he has to play.
"We will have to then sort out what's the best possible combination for the team in terms of the batting order. As of now, unless we have a decision, we cannot sit down and make a concrete plan. Obviously discussions will happen sometime today during the practice session as to what needs to be done if that situation [Dhoni does not play] arises. It's obviously going to be a different from what we've been playing till now. Just have to wait and see."
India will have to fit their incumbent players' preferences into those calculations. Kohli himself for example has been outstanding at No. 3 in T20Is lately. It wasn't that long ago that he appeared to be a fidgety player. He had a habit of hitting the ball too hard and got restless when he couldn't play according to a set template.
"My plan in my early T20 playing days was to get myself in for a few balls, maybe ten balls, and then score quickly," Kohli said. "I used to think too much about T20 cricket. I used to think that maybe I don't hit as many big shots as some of the other players, or that I don't hit too many sixes. So I used to try to do a lot more, plan too much."
In IPLs 2008, 2009 - when he was a rookie with Royal Challengers Bangalore - and 2012 and 2014 - when he was brought into the leadership fold - his strike rate was under 125. He did have outstanding seasons in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014 but the Australia tour showed Kohli's skill as a batsman in the sharpest light. He has added the sweep to his repertoire, having worked on it with Rahul Dravid, during India A's second unofficial Test against Australia A, ahead of the Sri Lanka tour. His extra-cover lofts have often been as striking as they have been productive. And the thirst for singles and twos has meshed well with his ability to now play with softer hands and still find the necessary runs.
His T20I average of 50.62 is the highest in the world under condition of 500 runs. Add that to him having the lowest dot-ball percentage in the world - 28.2 - and it is clear that he needs to be given every opportunity to take control of a cricket match.
"Now I play on instinct. I have come to terms with the fact that I can't hit too many sixes, so I concentrate on hitting boundaries," Kohli said. " I have tried to mould my game to that, try to hit the ball in the gaps and get fours, rather than sixes, which is a higher risk shot. I might hit more boundaries than sixes and still get the result. I am scoring at 160 still, so it doesn't matter if I am hitting sixes or fours or doing it in singles and doubles. That's the mindset I go in with in this format."

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo today, Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka refuted claims made by Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa that pressure is being exerted on the media.
Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, Patali Champika Ranawaka stated that anyone would agree that there is media freedom in the country today, and it is known by all, about how the former president manipulated the media.
Min.Ranawaka went on to explain that certain media institutions and journalists were bought over for money to carry out his own political activities,  and others were punished, media institutions like Sirasa were burnt and journalists like Lasantha Wickrematunge were murdered out in the open and a series of such events took place.
“He cannot talk about these things today. He does not have the right to talk about the suppression of the media”, charged the minster
Minister Champika Ranawaka also expressed views on the statement made by Retired Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva that the Sirasa Media Institution obtained from the LTTE
“He knows exactly who gave money to the LTTE” said the minister and went on to further note that allegations were raised that a sum of 800 million rupees was paid to the LTTE during the 2005 elections and today this has proven to be true. “What Sarath N. Silva says should not be believed”, said the minister noting that as a person who is familiar with the law, he should make such allegations with facts and he cannot speak for the sake of speaking

Maldives frees three accused of hiring Sri Lanka sniper

Three people arrested over a plot to assassinate the Maldivian President that involved a sniper brought into Maldives from Sri Lanka have been released on Sunday, the Haveeru reported.
A police spokesperson said the three men arrested on December 17 were released by the Criminal Court for lack of evidence.
He, however, did not give details. Confirming the arrest of the Sri Lankan sniper for the first time, police said in a statement in November that the 27-year-old man was arrested on October 24. He has been remanded by the Criminal Court.
Reports of the Sri Lankan sniper’s arrest came a day after Maldivian security forces confiscated assault rifles and hand guns in what has been the biggest weapons bust in the country’s history.
The weapons had been seized from Hibilhadhoo island in Baa Atoll being developed as a resort. The army had confirmed that two assault rifles found in the weapons bust belonged to the state armoury

'I don't see myself batting up the order' - MS Dhoni

India's limited-overs captain MS Dhoni has all but ruled himself out of batting up the order in the upcoming Asia Cup T20 and World Twenty20, starting March 8. Ahead of the team's departure to Bangladesh, Dhoni backed a stable, in-form, top order, and said that he would consider promoting a big-hitter instead of himself if there was a big partnership at the top.
"It is very difficult. In a normal scenario, I don't see myself batting up the order because of the batting line we have got," Dhoni said. This is a departure from Dhoni's recent preference of batting at No.4, though in a different format. Dhoni had batted at No.4 in the second ODI against Bangladesh last year in Mirpur, for the first time since July 2012. Dhoni showed glimpses of his best form during the course of his 47, and later said: "I would like to bat slightly up in the order so I can play a bit more freely."

Since that match, Dhoni has batted four times at No.4 in ODIs, scoring 134 runs.
Dhoni, however, explained that the T20 batting line-up was settled, with Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma opening; Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh form the middle order. Dhawan got bright starts against Australia in the T20s in Melbourne and Sydney and then set up India's win against Sri Lanka in the second T20 in Ranchi with a rapid fifty, his first in T20 internationals. Rohit, on his part, hit back-to-back fifties in Melbourne and Sydney, before making 43 in Ranchi. Kohli stroked three successive fifties in Australia, tallying 199 runs in the three-match T20 series, before being rested for the Sri Lanka T20s. From the middle order, Raina and Yuvraj helped India seal a clean sweep against Australia in Sydney with an unbroken 53-run partnership in a tight finish.
"Virat, he is at 3, Raina at 4, Yuvraj Singh at 5, I am 6, Jadeja, Hardik. We may try [a promotion] if there is good partnership; we may try one of the hitters to go up and express maybe from the very first ball," Dhoni said. "But whether I see myself getting that promotion, I think it will be slightly difficult."
Dhoni also dismissed concerns about the No.6 and No.7 batting positions, feeling that they would not have much to do, especially if the top order clicked.
"As of now it [No.6 and No.7] doesn't seem like [a problem]. Usually six and seven won't or should not get an opportunity. If the team is doing well, I don't think No.6 and No.7 will or should get more than 10 balls or 12 balls and you will have to make the most," he said.
Dhoni said he was keen to "give everybody a game"' ahead of the World T20. India named the same team for all three matches in the recent home series against Sri Lanka. It meant Pawan Negi, a left-field selection for the Asia Cup and the World T20, has not played an international game yet.
"I will try to give everybody a game because it is something as important as playing with a settled team," Dhoni said. "It is important for everybody to have games under their belt. Against few of the sides we will really be able to give games to few of the other players who are part of the team but have not got a chance to play so far but still we will look to win games and that's our top priority but the conditions will allow us to give a few games to others who have not played."

Kanye West Begs Mark Zuckerberg for Help

Kanye West has been mocked on Twitter, after claiming to be $US53 million in debt and asking Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for help.
The music artist, known for his Twitter tirades, took to the social media platform to inform his followers of his apparent financial problems, asking fans to "pray" for him.
In a separate tweet, West asked Mr Zuckerberg to invest $1 billion into his ideas.
"Mark Zuckerberg I know it's your [birthday] tomorrow, but can you please call me," he wrote.
"World, please tweet, FaceTime, Facebook, Instagram, whatever you gotta do to get Mark to support me."
Social media users immediately took to Twitter to mock West's request, starting the hashtag #TellMarkZuckerbergWhatYouNeed.
Some people shared photos of expensive cars and homes, while others were more modest in their requests.
Twitter user Tony Lopez asked for a Pepsi, while Slaviska asked for "a new PC".
Some pointed out that West's request was likely misdirected, as Mr Zuckerberg does not have a Twitter account.
The tweets were among several sent by West in the past day, with the rapper also announcing he had delayed the release of his next album The Life of Pablo by one week.
West said he needed to work on the track Wolves, which features fellow artists Frank Ocean and Caroline Shaw.
The Grammy-winning artist launched the album in Madison Square Garden in New York last Thursday, NME reported.

    DISCIPLINARY ACTION AGAINST MR?

The Disciplinary Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will initiate action against 30 MPs for violating party discipline.
The SLFP Central Committee, when it met on Friday, decided to delegate full authority to the Disciplinary Committee of the party to take action against MPs breaching party discipline, irrespective of their positions in the party.
“Internal discipline is important in a political party. At this point, my primary objective is to uphold Party Discipline,” President Maithripala Sirisena told senior members of the Central Committee on the sidelines of the Central Committee meeting on Friday evening.
“The Party now enjoys internal democracy. MPs or seniors could not express their views or opinions freely over the past 10 years. However, democracy should not be at the expense of party discipline” the President said.
Informed sources close to President Sirisena told the Sunday Observer that MPs who made statements about dividing the SLFP would be under investigation by the Disciplinary Committee.
“There is strong speculation that disciplinary action will be initiated against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa too,” a senior parliamentarian who is also a Central Committee member told the Sunday Observer.
After inquiries, the Disciplinary Committee will forward its findings to the Central Committee, the apex decision-making body of the party, to decide its course of action on ‘errant’ MPs.
Minister Sarath Amunugama told a press conference on Friday that eleven SLFP MPs supporting the ‘joint opposition’ would not join the pro-Rajapaksa party.
Amunugama, an ally of President Sirisena, said they had informed the party of their decision. The SLFP Central Committee has also decided not to endorse any request of members to act as an independent group in Parliament. It was a slap in the face for the joint opposition formed by the UPFA dissidents.
