US Election 2016: Cruz and Rubio attack Trump in debate

Republican presidential hopefuls Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio have unleashed a barrage of attacks on front-runner Donald Trump in the last debate before next week's pivotal primaries.
The senators sought to blunt Mr Trump's momentum after he won three of the first four contests.
Immigration, healthcare and outreach to Latino voters dominated the debate.
But like previous occasions, the debate quickly disintegrated into long periods of shouting and personal insults.

Guantanamo Bay: Obama in bid to close controversial prison

The White House has presented to Congress a plan to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, one of the president's long-standing goals.
It wants to transfer the remaining 91 detainees to their home countries or to US military or civilian prisons.
But Congress is deeply opposed to terror suspects being held on US soil and is expected to block the move.
The prison costs $445m (£316m) to run annually and closing it was a 2009 promise from President Barack Obama.
Human rights campaigners have repeatedly complained about the prison in Cuba, which has held 780 detainees since it opened in 2002.
The president told reporters on Tuesday it undermined national security.
"This is about closing a chapter in our history," said Mr Obama. "It reflects the lessons we've learned since 9/11 - lessons that must guide our nation going forward."
But Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio was scathing in his criticism, saying Guantanamo prisoners do not belong on US soil.
"These are literally enemy combatants," he said, adding he would ship terrorists straight to Guantanamo "to find out what they know".
Life after Guantanamo prison
Will Guantanamo prison finally close?
There are four main components in the White House plan:
  • Transfer 35 detainees to foreign countries who have been designated to do so
  • Do periodic reviews of remaining detainees to see if their detention is still necessary
  • Continue to use legal tools to deal with remaining detainees
  • Working with Congress to establish a location in the US to hold detainees who will not go to foreign countries
It estimates the move would save up to $180m (£128m) a year in cost savings.
The president, who will complete his second and final term in January, said it was important not to pass the problem on to his successor.
"Keeping this facility open is contrary to our values. It undermines our standing in the world. It is viewed as a stain on our broader record of upholding the highest standards of rule of law.''

Analysis: Tara McKelvey, BBC White House reporter

President Obama has tried for years to close Guantanamo. He and his deputies say that it hurts the reputation of the US and that militants use "the infamous orange jumpsuit", as one senior administration official described it, as a recruiting tool.
But members of Congress have baulked at Mr Obama's plan to close the prison, saying they believe it should remain open - and they don't want any detainees to be transferred to the US. Representative Mike Pompeo of Kansas, for example, said the prisoners should "stay right where they are".
Lately, though, White House officials said that lawmakers, or at least some of them, seem more receptive to the idea.
A senior administration official told reporters that there's "room for conversation". That's important since Mr Obama has less than a year to close the prison - and for him time is of the essence.

Guantanamo Bay is located on an American naval base in south eastern Cuba. Former US President George W Bush opened it to accommodate foreign terror suspects after the 9/11 attacks on the US.
One of the key complaints from human rights groups is that many detainees have been held there without charge or trial.
The plan does not specify where in the US detainees would go.
But the Pentagon has considered 13 different locations in the US, including seven prisons in Colorado, South Carolina and Kansas, and six other places on military bases.

Sex abuse victims to face Cardinal George Pell in Rome

Catholic Cardinal George Pell will face an audience of child abuse survivors when he testifies to an Australian inquiry from a Rome hotel.
Cardinal Pell was excused from returning to Australia to testify at the royal commission into child sex abuse due to ill health.
Abuse survivors and their supporters have raised enough money to attend Cardinal Pell's testimony in Rome.
A room at the Hotel Quirinale will be the venue for next week's hearing.
The cardinal's testimony begins on Monday morning Australian time and is expected to run for three to four days.
It will be streamed live to the Royal Commission's hearing rooms in Sydney and Ballarat Town Hall, and will also be viewable online.
The group that will comprise Cardinal Pell's audience, which raised more than A$200,000 ($143,000; £100,000) through crowdfunding, is expected to fly to Rome this weekend.
Survivor Andrew Collins told Fairfax on Monday it would be an "arduous journey" to Rome, but said Cardinal Pell "should have to see people and look into their eyes".
The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has focused much of its efforts on widespread child abuse by Catholic church clergy in Australia.
It is currently hearing testimony regarding child abuse that occurred in the city of Ballarat, including by notorious paedophile priest Gerald Ridsdale.
Cardinal Pell was a priest in Ballarat and lived together with Ridsdale in the early 1970s.
He is not facing criminal charges, but detractors say child abuse that happened under his watch has made his Vatican position untenable.
Cardinal Pell has testified at the inquiry twice before in relation to other matters, once in person and once via video link.

Austria-SL benefit from peace dividend -President

President Maitripala Sirisena in a statement to the media during his visit to Austria said Sri Lanka and Austria would work closely to ensure that both countries benefit from the changes taking place in Sri Lanka and from the peace dividend. "Sri Lanka and Austria have enjoyed friendly and cordial diplomatic relations for over six decades and I have just concluded a productive discussion with the Federal President and discussed ways of making our partnerships stronger," the President added.
"Our main focus is to strengthen bilateral trade and bilateral high-level exchange has been put in place, thus helping to expand cooperation in trade and economic relations, culture, education and sports.
Austria has provided a number of scholarships to Sri Lankan students in the hospitality field contributing to the development of Sri Lanka's hospitality sector.
"I am happy that Austrian companies are active in my country, implementing a number of projects. Among others, we discussed matters of mutual interest such as joint investment, ventures and opportunities including, increase market access. We would work closely to ensure that both countries benefit from the changes that are taking place in Sri Lanka and from the peace dividend . Trade and investment between our two countries are also showing a significant and a positive sign," he said.
"We are keen that the momentum in our trade volume turnover will increase in the coming years. Ceylon tea is popular in Austria and I have learnt that Ayurveda has also become a significant attraction for Austrain tourists", he added.

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz announced today at a campaign event in Nevada that he has asked for his Communications Director Rick Tyler's resignation.
Cruz's action comes after Tyler shared on his social media account a subtitled cellphone video that falsely shows Rubio telling a young man that "not many answers" are in the Bible, and after Rubio condemned the move as a "dirty trick."
Tyler deleted the post and then apologized for it.
"I posted in haste. I should not have done it," Tyler said on Fox News this morning. "I've apologized to Marco Rubio. I apologized to the campaign and I posted that on my Facebook and also shared it on Twitter and I'm saying it here. It was a mistake and I would not knowingly post something that I knew to be false but you're right. The judgment about what he said was wrong and so I apologize about that."
But Cruz did not think it was enough. Cruz said that it was a mistake to question anyone's faith and called for Tyler's resignation. It is unclear if Tyler has in fact resigned.
"Rick Tyler's a good man. This was a grave error of judgment," Cruz said this afternoon. "But I'll tell you even if it was true, we are not a campaign that's going to question the faith of another candidate. Even if it were true, our campaign should not have sent it. That's why I've asked for Rick Tyler's resignation because the standards of conduct in this campaign have been made absolutely clear for every member of the campaign."
Cruz then turned back to hitting Rubio: "I understand that Marco's campaign team believes it's politically advantageous to try to distract the topic from his own record. And they have a long record they've earned in South Carolina of engaging in this kind of trickery and impugning whoever their opponent is to distract the attention," Cruz said.
Rubio's communications director, Alex Conant, commented on Cruz's move to get rid of Tyler.
"Rick is a really good spokesman who had the unenviable task of working for a candidate willing to do or say anything to get elected," Conant said in a statement. "There is a culture in the Cruz campaign, from top to bottom, that no lie is too big and no trick too dirty. Rick did the right thing by apologizing to Marco. It's high time for Ted Cruz to do the right thing and stop the lies."
Speaking to reporters in Las Vegas earlier today, a visibly angry Rubio commented on Cruz's latest hit. "I think we are at a point where we start asking about accountability," he said.
"This campaign now has repeatedly done things that they have to apologize for, and no one is ever held accountable. Who's going to be held accountable for making up this video, who is going to be held accountable for lying about Ben Carson? Who was held accountable for the robocalls, and who was held accountable for the commercials on television that they had to pull down?" Rubio went on, referring to several shady tactics the Cruz campaign has been linked to in recent weeks.
Rubio also called the video "incredibly disturbing."
Rubio said he accepted the Cruz campaign's apology, but that this was starting to become a pattern.
"It's every single day something comes out of the Cruz campaign that's deceptive and untrue," he said.
Rubio said the Bible video was "perhaps the most offensive" tactic to date, as it attacked his faith.
"I know exactly what I said to that young man," Rubio said. "I said the answer to every question you'll ever have is in that book."

Dhoni's spasms may shake up India's batting combination - Kohli

In the lead up to the World T20, India's success in the shortest format has been built on the success of their top order. They swept Australia 3-0 with Virat Kohli scoring 199 runs in three matches. He was dismissed only once. Rohit Sharma was not too far behind, making 143 runs at an average of 47.66 and a strike rate of 136.19. Shikhar Dhawan found form against Sri Lanka and even showed signs of an expanded range of shots on the leg side.
It is likely that these three will still be India's top three when they play the World T20, but at the Asia Cup they have a minor problem. MS Dhoni is an uncertain starter for the tournament opener against Bangladesh after an onset of back spasms during training in Fatullah on Monday and this means that the batting combination needs to be relooked. So, Parthiv Patel, who has not played for India since 2012, has been flown in as cover.
Parthiv was part of the senior core that won Gujarat their first-ever domestic one-day trophy last December. He hit his first-ever List A ton to secure the title. He was in fine form in Twenty20s as well, striking four fifties in five matches, including three on the trot. But perhaps the most surprising aspect of his success in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was his strike rate - 162.80 - comfortably the best among the top-five run-getters in the tournament. Parthiv finished with 337 runs in nine matches, but all those runs had come at the top of the order.

Budging Rohit, Dhawan and Kohli off Nos. 1, 2 and 3 does not seem likely. Then there is Suresh Raina, who needs to get used to No. 4 because Dhoni wants to try him at that position in the World T20, and Yuvraj Singh can bat no lower than No. 5. So if Dhoni, who is the regular No. 6 is unable to play, Parthiv might well have to slot into the lower-middle order. None of this is certain because India have not ruled out their captain from playing the match on Wednesday, but if the injury is anywhere near serious and with the World T20 just weeks away, it seems logical that they won't take any risks.
"Obviously, a player having a niggle just before a game and obviously someone like MS who is sort of a pillar for us in the middle order [is a problem]," Kohli said. "[And with] Parthiv coming in, we will obviously have to sit down and see [what happens] if that situation comes in where he has to play.
"We will have to then sort out what's the best possible combination for the team in terms of the batting order. As of now, unless we have a decision, we cannot sit down and make a concrete plan. Obviously discussions will happen sometime today during the practice session as to what needs to be done if that situation [Dhoni does not play] arises. It's obviously going to be a different from what we've been playing till now. Just have to wait and see."
India will have to fit their incumbent players' preferences into those calculations. Kohli himself for example has been outstanding at No. 3 in T20Is lately. It wasn't that long ago that he appeared to be a fidgety player. He had a habit of hitting the ball too hard and got restless when he couldn't play according to a set template.
"My plan in my early T20 playing days was to get myself in for a few balls, maybe ten balls, and then score quickly," Kohli said. "I used to think too much about T20 cricket. I used to think that maybe I don't hit as many big shots as some of the other players, or that I don't hit too many sixes. So I used to try to do a lot more, plan too much."
In IPLs 2008, 2009 - when he was a rookie with Royal Challengers Bangalore - and 2012 and 2014 - when he was brought into the leadership fold - his strike rate was under 125. He did have outstanding seasons in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014 but the Australia tour showed Kohli's skill as a batsman in the sharpest light. He has added the sweep to his repertoire, having worked on it with Rahul Dravid, during India A's second unofficial Test against Australia A, ahead of the Sri Lanka tour. His extra-cover lofts have often been as striking as they have been productive. And the thirst for singles and twos has meshed well with his ability to now play with softer hands and still find the necessary runs.
His T20I average of 50.62 is the highest in the world under condition of 500 runs. Add that to him having the lowest dot-ball percentage in the world - 28.2 - and it is clear that he needs to be given every opportunity to take control of a cricket match.
"Now I play on instinct. I have come to terms with the fact that I can't hit too many sixes, so I concentrate on hitting boundaries," Kohli said. " I have tried to mould my game to that, try to hit the ball in the gaps and get fours, rather than sixes, which is a higher risk shot. I might hit more boundaries than sixes and still get the result. I am scoring at 160 still, so it doesn't matter if I am hitting sixes or fours or doing it in singles and doubles. That's the mindset I go in with in this format."

Min. Ranawaka reacts to contradictory statements made by former CJ Sarath Silva

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo today, Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka refuted claims made by Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa that pressure is being exerted on the media.
Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, Patali Champika Ranawaka stated that anyone would agree that there is media freedom in the country today, and it is known by all, about how the former president manipulated the media.
Min.Ranawaka went on to explain that certain media institutions and journalists were bought over for money to carry out his own political activities,  and others were punished, media institutions like Sirasa were burnt and journalists like Lasantha Wickrematunge were murdered out in the open and a series of such events took place.
“He cannot talk about these things today. He does not have the right to talk about the suppression of the media”, charged the minster
Minister Champika Ranawaka also expressed views on the statement made by Retired Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva that the Sirasa Media Institution obtained from the LTTE
“He knows exactly who gave money to the LTTE” said the minister and went on to further note that allegations were raised that a sum of 800 million rupees was paid to the LTTE during the 2005 elections and today this has proven to be true. But the only issue is that the hearing for this case have been concealed by various courts.”
The minster noted that if there is such a thing in relation to Sirasa it should be investigated.
The minister went on to add that the Former C.J has said that Mahinda Rajapaksa was released from the Helping Hambantota case, and then he said that was one of the biggest political crimes which have been committed and that Mahinda should be in jail.
“What Sarath N. Silva says should not be believed”, said the minister noting that as a person who is familiar with the law, he should make such allegations with facts and he cannot speak for the sake of speaking

Maldives frees three accused of hiring Sri Lanka sniper

Three people arrested over a plot to assassinate the Maldivian President that involved a sniper brought into Maldives from Sri Lanka have been released on Sunday, the Haveeru reported.
A police spokesperson said the three men arrested on December 17 were released by the Criminal Court for lack of evidence.
He, however, did not give details. Confirming the arrest of the Sri Lankan sniper for the first time, police said in a statement in November that the 27-year-old man was arrested on October 24. He has been remanded by the Criminal Court.
Reports of the Sri Lankan sniper’s arrest came a day after Maldivian security forces confiscated assault rifles and hand guns in what has been the biggest weapons bust in the country’s history.
The weapons had been seized from Hibilhadhoo island in Baa Atoll being developed as a resort. The army had confirmed that two assault rifles found in the weapons bust belonged to the state armoury

'I don't see myself batting up the order' - MS Dhoni

India's limited-overs captain MS Dhoni has all but ruled himself out of batting up the order in the upcoming Asia Cup T20 and World Twenty20, starting March 8. Ahead of the team's departure to Bangladesh, Dhoni backed a stable, in-form, top order, and said that he would consider promoting a big-hitter instead of himself if there was a big partnership at the top.
"It is very difficult. In a normal scenario, I don't see myself batting up the order because of the batting line we have got," Dhoni said. This is a departure from Dhoni's recent preference of batting at No.4, though in a different format. Dhoni had batted at No.4 in the second ODI against Bangladesh last year in Mirpur, for the first time since July 2012. Dhoni showed glimpses of his best form during the course of his 47, and later said: "I would like to bat slightly up in the order so I can play a bit more freely."

Since that match, Dhoni has batted four times at No.4 in ODIs, scoring 134 runs.
Dhoni, however, explained that the T20 batting line-up was settled, with Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma opening; Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh form the middle order. Dhawan got bright starts against Australia in the T20s in Melbourne and Sydney and then set up India's win against Sri Lanka in the second T20 in Ranchi with a rapid fifty, his first in T20 internationals. Rohit, on his part, hit back-to-back fifties in Melbourne and Sydney, before making 43 in Ranchi. Kohli stroked three successive fifties in Australia, tallying 199 runs in the three-match T20 series, before being rested for the Sri Lanka T20s. From the middle order, Raina and Yuvraj helped India seal a clean sweep against Australia in Sydney with an unbroken 53-run partnership in a tight finish.
"Virat, he is at 3, Raina at 4, Yuvraj Singh at 5, I am 6, Jadeja, Hardik. We may try [a promotion] if there is good partnership; we may try one of the hitters to go up and express maybe from the very first ball," Dhoni said. "But whether I see myself getting that promotion, I think it will be slightly difficult."
Dhoni also dismissed concerns about the No.6 and No.7 batting positions, feeling that they would not have much to do, especially if the top order clicked.
"As of now it [No.6 and No.7] doesn't seem like [a problem]. Usually six and seven won't or should not get an opportunity. If the team is doing well, I don't think No.6 and No.7 will or should get more than 10 balls or 12 balls and you will have to make the most," he said.
Dhoni said he was keen to "give everybody a game"' ahead of the World T20. India named the same team for all three matches in the recent home series against Sri Lanka. It meant Pawan Negi, a left-field selection for the Asia Cup and the World T20, has not played an international game yet.
"I will try to give everybody a game because it is something as important as playing with a settled team," Dhoni said. "It is important for everybody to have games under their belt. Against few of the sides we will really be able to give games to few of the other players who are part of the team but have not got a chance to play so far but still we will look to win games and that's our top priority but the conditions will allow us to give a few games to others who have not played."

Kanye West Begs Mark Zuckerberg for Help

Kanye West has been mocked on Twitter, after claiming to be $US53 million in debt and asking Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for help.
The music artist, known for his Twitter tirades, took to the social media platform to inform his followers of his apparent financial problems, asking fans to "pray" for him.
In a separate tweet, West asked Mr Zuckerberg to invest $1 billion into his ideas.
"Mark Zuckerberg I know it's your [birthday] tomorrow, but can you please call me," he wrote.
"World, please tweet, FaceTime, Facebook, Instagram, whatever you gotta do to get Mark to support me."
Social media users immediately took to Twitter to mock West's request, starting the hashtag #TellMarkZuckerbergWhatYouNeed.
Some people shared photos of expensive cars and homes, while others were more modest in their requests.
Twitter user Tony Lopez asked for a Pepsi, while Slaviska asked for "a new PC".
Some pointed out that West's request was likely misdirected, as Mr Zuckerberg does not have a Twitter account.
The tweets were among several sent by West in the past day, with the rapper also announcing he had delayed the release of his next album The Life of Pablo by one week.
West said he needed to work on the track Wolves, which features fellow artists Frank Ocean and Caroline Shaw.
The Grammy-winning artist launched the album in Madison Square Garden in New York last Thursday, NME reported.

DISCIPLINARY ACTION AGAINST MR?

The Disciplinary Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will initiate action against 30 MPs for violating party discipline.
The SLFP Central Committee, when it met on Friday, decided to delegate full authority to the Disciplinary Committee of the party to take action against MPs breaching party discipline, irrespective of their positions in the party.
“Internal discipline is important in a political party. At this point, my primary objective is to uphold Party Discipline,” President Maithripala Sirisena told senior members of the Central Committee on the sidelines of the Central Committee meeting on Friday evening.
“The Party now enjoys internal democracy. MPs or seniors could not express their views or opinions freely over the past 10 years. However, democracy should not be at the expense of party discipline” the President said.
Informed sources close to President Sirisena told the Sunday Observer that MPs who made statements about dividing the SLFP would be under investigation by the Disciplinary Committee.
“There is strong speculation that disciplinary action will be initiated against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa too,” a senior parliamentarian who is also a Central Committee member told the Sunday Observer.
After inquiries, the Disciplinary Committee will forward its findings to the Central Committee, the apex decision-making body of the party, to decide its course of action on ‘errant’ MPs.
Minister Sarath Amunugama told a press conference on Friday that eleven SLFP MPs supporting the ‘joint opposition’ would not join the pro-Rajapaksa party.
Amunugama, an ally of President Sirisena, said they had informed the party of their decision. The SLFP Central Committee has also decided not to endorse any request of members to act as an independent group in Parliament. It was a slap in the face for the joint opposition formed by the UPFA dissidents.

President Sirisena meets German Chancellor

President Maithripala Sirisena met the German Chancellor Angela Merkel a short while ago at the Chancellor’s office in Berlin.

During the visit the president will meet the three highest citizens in the Federal republic of Germany, including the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of the Bundestag (Speaker) Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert, and Federal President of Germany Joachim Gauck.

President will spend three days in Germany before leaving for Vienna on a 2-day visit to Austria.
